On the floating cities above the cloud-floor, the only rule is don’t fall.
Enter the avionic steampunk world of master storyteller Christopher Hopper as he takes readers on a fast-paced, death-defying adventure in the skies.
Junar is a seventeen-year-old boy following in the footsteps of his Ace Pilot father, Leif, as a flyer in the Kili-Boranna Guild, better known as The Sky Riders. As if life couldn’t get any better, Junar’s First Year apprenticeship riding the massive birds of the sky, the majestic felrell, takes a fortuitous leap forward when his father is promoted to the most prestigious position in all of Aria-Prime—Timber Pilot. Upon moving to the capital city of Christiana with his family, Junar meets fellow apprentices Liv, a strong-headed and alluring confidant, and Erik, whose favorite pastime is making life miserable for Junar.
Junar’s world takes an unexpected turn, however, when his father has a startling change of heart about his promotion. Embarrassed by his father’s weakness and his mother’s past, Junar endeavors to excel in his apprenticeship, and distances himself from his family by making his own name in the Guild. He sets his sights on competing in the Champions Race—a cross-world gauntlet whose winner is listed among the greatest felrell pilots in history.
But behind the scenes, political factions and government conspiracies collide with Junar’s new plans. The young pilot suffers a horrific blow at the hands of the Zy-Adair—the notorious Sky Pirates. And soon, his perfect world is spiraling out of control.
From his unsuspecting alliance with the Inventors—dubious tinkerers and social outcasts—to his unlikely associations with the Brologi—the Chancellory Police—Junar must find a way to plead his case before the Chancellor of Aria-Prime and piece together a puzzle that threatens his entire world’s way of life.
The Sky Riders The Sky Riders An Inventors World Novel Book 1 eBook Christopher Hopper
This is the first time I have ever read a novel by Christopher Hopper (not counting the books co-written with Wayne Batson). Hopper has created a complex and beautiful - but deadly - world in Aria-Prime. I am especially fond of the giant fellrell. The flight scenes of Sky Riders are thrilling and incredible. You feel as though you are right there riding with the characters. The book starts out rather slow for my taste. But by the second half it really begins to take off (no pun intended) and is almost nonstop action all the way to the end. I did see the final plot twist coming miles away. But I don't mind that.
However this book is also a very tragic one, almost too much for me. There aren't too many authors out there willing to break the hero all the way down to his absolute rock bottom. But Hopper pulls no punches. Hopefully this will only mean that the ending will be all that much greater.
You may not want to read this book until the sequel comes out, though. Nothing is resolved in this book and we are left on the mother of all cliffhangers. Let's hope that book two will be soon in coming.

The Sky Riders The Sky Riders An Inventors World Novel Book 1 eBook Christopher Hopper Reviews
This book drew me in from the very start. It's fast-paced, not letting you linger in one place for too long. Characters are likable, relatable, and some of them cool for just being plain awesome. When I got this book, I literally absorbed it in. I hung onto every word and every action. We have touches of everything mystery, crime fighting, action, romance, and family life. The story is great.
The world, however…is just like the rest of the book! Though it's not as colorful as I would have liked, I can tell a lot of creativity went into the making of Aria-Prime. Whether it's lingo in the Aviary or massive airship technology, it's deep. I only wish there was more variety, but that's nothing to worry about.
I've read all of Christopher Hopper's fiction works. This is one of the best.
The story started out rather slow for my taste, however by the 1/3 point it really picked up. The last quarter of the book had me gripping my kindle tightly, holding my breath in some places and exhaling with relief in others. The finale was superbly written. I recall squeaking every so slightly when I finished the last sentence and set my kindle in my lap. My brother quirked his eyebrow at me and I stared back at him with a tremulous look of wonder and surprise across my face. But I'll let the reader determine whether that response was indeed called for.
Overall, 5 stars; despite the slow beginning and several minor plot errors, it was a thrilling read. I suggest this book to everyone ) and I eagerly look forward to the future release of a second book!
Haven't enjoyed a book like this for a long time. Any story that gets me emotionally charged is a fine one. I think I am hooked. Granted having the three best characters knocked off in the first book does not bode well, but I will reserve judgement until the second book. If Hopper is the type of author who enjoys knocking off his main characters, then the relationship will end.
...Me! I want to fly on the back of a Raptor- A red tail Hawk or Peregrine Falcon, both who live about us here in Central Coast, California...
This book lets us experience the possible thrills/elan if Bird-Flight!
And, since I've flown in open cockpit airplanes, including several 1930's-40's bipanles, this is DXXXX good-oh!
...As well, there is a rather very good Sci-Fi world of sky-cities, somewhat a steam-punk feel with added guilds, substrata societies, and gleaming alternate science/engineering...Very Nice-and KUDOS to the author!
Lots of action, good world development, it was fun to read. My only complaint is it dragged at times as the hopelessly trusting characters ignored the glaringly obvious and acted stupidly to ensure their undoing. The twist at the end was predictable from very early on, as was the fate of the characters. Think crewman number 5 in the red shirt from Star Trek obvious.
SPOILER For example, the sudden conversion of Jumar from hating his mom for very clearly delienated reasons to a forgiving, loving son was not at all believable. All book long he detests her, then in a fit of grief he has an epiphany. Weak.
Maybe the author will develop the plot with a little less transparency as the serial moves forward; if he can match the other aspects of the book then it will be so much better.
I was just reading author's other work The White Lion Chronicles trilogy when The Sky Riders was released. So, after finishing the trilogy I read this book with great anticipation. In it author puts us in an unusual environment, several floating cities and some mountaintops where people could live. The whole earth is enveloped by a deadly cloud which on the other hand is used as a fuel source. Everything is steam powered (may be this is why book's category is Steampunk) and it feels both modern and like in the industrial era at the same time. People move in air balloons and ride big birds. And flying with the main guy was so real. Just incredible. Author knows how to put the reader inside the protagonist. It's like thinking, speaking, flying and going anywhere with him. Not that I always liked what he did or said. There was a point at the end that I just wanted to distance myself from him.
The only unbelievable point for me was when the guys got pilot weapons without permission and went on a night ride to fight pirates. This went without any objection from the Headmaster. At least I expected some rebuke, getting into account how he treated the guy previously.
As usual I always look for the lessons author wants to teach those reading. In my opinion the main lesson here is about greed that encompasses those in power and on the opposite side is integrity that it's worth dying for.
The second half is almost as reading a crime book. A lot of twists and turns. I suspected some characters, but not that much. The finish is leaving protagonist in mid air falling. I'm sure it will survive but how, we will read in the next installment named "Raising Thendara". I anticipate it very much.
